V&A Design and Disability Exhibition
If you live with a visible or invisible disability, it is not just the condition itself that disables us, it is also the system and discourse around our disability that disables us. And perhaps more so. This can lead us to internalising feelings of inferiority, creating a narrative that holds us within the constraints of the expectations society has carved out for us.
On Sunday, I went to the Design and Disability exhibition at the V&A. It showcased contributions from the Disabled community to the world of art, design innovations undertaken by companies prepared to break the mould, and times members of the Disabled community have broken down barriers to be featured on magazine covers. So often Disabled people are not featured in public spaces.
Among designs that caught my attention, the Crocs Adaptive range was one. Featuring a slip-resistant outsole and a unique adjustable heel strap. You can shop the range here: Sites-crocs_us-Site
Another brand that caught my attention was Cool Crutches, founded by Amelia Peckham and Clare Bruddel, following Peckham’s own spinal injury. Whereas most crutches out for sale are plain in design, Cool Crutches creates customisable walking sticks and crutches in a variety of colours and sizes, recognising Disabled people as an independent group with choice, their own style and preferences. They have a new summer collection and offer 10% off your first order. You can shop here- Crutches | Walking Sticks | Mobility Aids – Cool Crutches
And finally we move onto the sex lives of Disabled people. If you have a physical disability, you have virtually no representation in the world of sex. If you live with a physical disability, the world renders you sexless whether you actually feel that way or not. So this brings us to the Enby (named after the acronym for Non-Binary), an accessible, gender-free sex toy designed to suit all kinds of bodies. Wild Flower, the product’s designers, created the vibrator with people who have limited mobility in mind. It is fully flexible and has a hands-free grip at its base. You can find it here: Enby 2 - Silicone Vibrator - Powerful Vibrator - Quiet Vibrator - Wild Flower
